K17: Babies

It's back-to-school in a brand new year, so let's talk about something else that's brand new... babies!  This lesson features traditional nursery rhymes, picture books, and some time for reflection and sharing, because each of us has stories about when we were babies.

Intent: It’s a new year, so let’s learn about babies – you were one, once!  We will use understanding developmental changes from baby to child to parallel changes through the school year in academic and social skills and predict future growth as the school year goes on.

1. INTRODUCTION

a.       Welcome Song:  Welcome to the Library (To “London Bridge is Falling Down.”)
Welcome to the library, library, library.
Welcome to the library, please come inside and read.
We’re glad to have you here today, here today, here today.
We’re glad to have you here today, today’s a special day.

b.      Finger Play: Ten Little Fingers

I have ten little fingers, and they belong to me (show hands)
And I can make them do things: would you like to see?
I can close them up tight, or spread them out wide.
I can put them together or make them all hide. (Silent clap, behind back)
I can make them jump high, or I can make them jump low.
I can fold them up quietly and hold them just so (fingers crossed, hand to lap.)

cSet Library Behavioral Expectations: (reinforce / commend examples )

d.       Mystery Bag :  Baby rattle (blanket, baby clothes, or toy baby also would work.)

e.      Word of the Week:  (Forms a cornerstone of the lesson, aids in understanding and connecting text themes)
i.                    English: Baby (bay BEE)
ii.                  Spanish Bebe´ (bay-BAY)
iii.                ASL (American Sign Language.)  Sign language is a real language where people use their hands to communicate.  The sign for baby is very easy to remember.  Put your arms together like you are holding and rocking a baby… that’s it.  (http://lifeprint.com/)

f.        Intent & Agenda:

I started the lesson off with two B&W clip art pictures of the traditional New Year picture (old man with a scythe, baby, clock or hourglass) and explained how the new year is like a new baby.)

A new year has started, so this week we’re going to talk about something else new… babies!  We were all babies once, so it’s a special time to everyone.   Your families all probably have stories they tell about something you did as a baby.  And think of all the things you’ve learned how to do since you were born!  Today, we’ll read some books about babies, and write a class story about things that babies learn as they grow up.

2.  STORY/RESOURCE #1: Froggy’s Baby Sister by Jonathan London (2003, Scholastic)
a.  Pre-reading: Look at cover, predict what book is about by title and picture.   Infer from conversations in INTRODUCTION what Froggy’s in for.

b.  READ:

c.       Reflection:  What’s Froggy’s opinion at the end of the book?  How has he changed his mind?  Why?

d.      Extension Activity:  Finger Play:  Baby’s Nap
This is baby, ready for a nap (hold up finger)
Lay him down on mama’s lap (lay finger on other palm)
Cover him up so he won’t peep (wrap finger like blanket)
Rock him ‘till he’s fast asleep (rock hands)

e.      Jokes:
                   ·         Mama tomato is taking her baby tomatoes for a walk through
the garden.  One baby tomato keeps falling behind.
Mama Tomato finally stomps her feet and yells…   KETCH UP!!!

                  ·         How do you get a baby astronaut to go to sleep?  You Rock It!

3.  POEM:       Traditional Nursery Rhymes:
                               Pat-A-Cake
       Rock-A-Bye Baby
