Mystery Box:  What’s inside the mystery box today?  The object inside the box will give us a clue what our story time is going to be about.  (Object this week is a sleeping bag.)

Word of the Week: camping/ acampada

Sign language is a real language where people use their hands to communicate.  Here is the sign for camping.  Take your thumb, index finger, and pinkie and rest them against the same fingers of your opposite hand.  They make a triangle, and together, it looks like a little tent.  Now tap your fingers together twice – that’s the sign for camping!

Pre-reading:  Last week, we read stories about the season of fall or autumn.  As the weather gets cooler, one thing I like to do is go camping!  Who here has gone camping before?  What are some things we do when we go camping (hike, have a campfire, scary stories, roast food over the fire, sing songs, sleep in a tent, go swimming…)

Story/Resource #1:  Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night by Cynthia Rylant

Reflection:  What did they do?  What looks like fun?

POEM:  Campfire by Douglas Florian in SummerSaults.(Greenwillow books, 2002)

Action Rhyme:  I am going camping!
I am going camping.
(point to self)

Time to pack
(look at watch)

My tent, my bedroll,
(Make tent with hands, then fold hands to cheek.)

And a snack.
(Pretend to eat)

I'll sit by the campfire
(warm hands over fire.)

Its glow so bright.
(wiggle fingers for fire.)

Then snooze in my tent
(Pretend to snore.)

'Til the morning light!
(Open eyes wide, forming sun over head.)
